In the early 1970s Irina Ionesco appeared unexpectedly in the Parisian art photography community with a collection of unique and erotic black and white photographs. The photographs were mostly portraits of women partially-dressed in elaborate costumes, surrounded by eclectic props – many projecting a moody “gothic” feel. While some of the portraits are fairly straightforward, some include elements that are distinctly fetishistic or give at least a fetish undertone to the work. In those early 1970’s photographs, the women are often wearing lavish costumes, amid props that hint of symbolic meaning. Sometimes partially dressed in erotic poses…the women are as if unimpressed and unconcerned by the viewer’s attention…giving a distinct “aura” to Ionesco’s photographs.
